Have you exhausted all of your nonsurgical and minimally invasive anti-aging options, and feel as if it is time for a more permanent solution for your fine lines, wrinkles, and drooping skin? If it’s time to consider a facelift, there are several things you need to think about before scheduling your procedure.
Facelifts are an option for both men and women
Of the over 120,000 facelifts performed in the U.S. in 2016, women accounted for about 107,000 of the procedures. However, even though only 13,000 men underwent facelift surgery, it is the number five most popular surgical procedure among the male population. The reason for this is often attributed to the constant and increasing competition in the workplace, as well as the desire to look young and virile – the same basic reasons many women choose to undergo facelift surgery. Whatever your motivation, plastic surgery is becoming increasingly more accepted as something that can have a positive effect on your quality of life, and with the constant innovation in surgical devices and techniques, you can boost your confidence without looking as if you had any “work” done.
What to Expect from the Procedure
Understanding the facelift procedure is something that can help you throughout the process. When you undergo a facelift, Dr. Vasisht will remove excess skin and fat from your face and neck, and realign the remaining skin to give you a smoother, more youthful look. The basic facelift procedure involves a series of small incisions along your hairline that follow the contour in front of your ear and continue under and behind the ear, ending at the lower scalp. This allows Dr. Vasisht to remove fatty deposits and sagging tissue, and to stretch and tighten your skin. Once the procedure is complete, the incisions are closed using tiny stitches designed to minimize any potential scarring. Dr. Vasisht is experienced in several facelift techniques, and will choose the one that will give you the results you desire. You may also choose to combine your facelift with other procedures such as a neck lift or eye lift, depending on your needs and aesthetic goals. These are options that you will discuss in your consultations prior to surgery.
Your Facelift Recovery
Immediately after your facelift procedure is complete, your face will be wrapped in bandages. These bandages are designed to reduce swelling and bruising and protect your incisions. You will need to rest and limit your activities for a few days, but keeping your blood circulating will help speed your recovery along, so gentle movement is encouraged. Your stitches or staples will typically be removed within a week, as long as you are healing properly and following your post-surgery incision care instructions. Some minor pain or discomfort is normal, and can be managed with over-the-counter medications. By about three weeks after your facelift, any residual swelling or bruising should be mostly gone, and you can get back to your daily routine, as long as you aren’t doing anything too strenuous or with a risk for injury to your face. Dr. Vasisht will give you specific instructions for post-surgical care, and will see you for follow-up appointments to monitor your progress.
It Won’t Stop You From Aging
One of the most important things to remember when you decide to undergo any sort of plastic surgery is to understand the limitations and manage your expectations. Will a facelift give you a more youthful, smoother look? Absolutely. Will it stop the aging process altogether? Of course not. A facelift is designed to turn back the clock, and although the results are considered permanent, it is impossible to stop your body (and skin) from aging. You may eventually need a touch-up here and there – fillers, facial treatments, etc. – but for the most part, with diligent skin care, sun protection, and a healthy lifestyle, you can maintain your younger appearance for a long time to come.
