Reduce the appearance of frown lines with Jeuveau® in Voorhees Township, NJ

Jeuveau® is a prescription medicine used to treat moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows, also called glabellar lines or “11s.” It belongs to a group of medicines known as neuromodulators that also includes Dysport® and Botox®. These are popular nonsurgical alternatives to more invasive procedures for facial rejuvenation. Jeuveau® is the latest of these medicines to appear on the market, providing fantastic results at a slightly lower price tag.

What Is Jeuveau®?

Jeuveau® is a wrinkle-relaxing injectable containing prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs, a purified form of botulinum toxin type A. Botulinum toxin type A is a neurotoxin derived from the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. It is the same toxin responsible for botulism, which has many therapeutic uses when used in small doses in medical formations.

The FDA has currently approved Jeuveau® only for the treatment of frown lines. Any other use would be “off-label.” Popularly called “Newtox” or the new Botox, this treatment provides the same wrinkle-reducing benefits as its predecessors at a slightly lower price and with possibly better safety.

While all wrinkle relaxers contain the same active ingredient, they have different formulas. Jeuveau® is made with proprietary Hi-Pure™ technology, which makes the product purer and thus safer for users compared to other neuromodulators. This was tested in pre-clinical trials, and the product has also been tested in over 2,000 subjects for safety and efficiency.

How Does Jeuveau® Work?

Jeuveau® works just like other neuromodulators: by temporarily blocking nerve signals that make facial muscles contract. More specifically, its active ingredient (prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs) prevents acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction, which temporarily stops the injected muscle from moving.

While wrinkles are primarily a result of aging, they first start to form in areas where skin creases with facial movement. Wrinkles that form only with facial movement are called dynamic wrinkles. These are the lines that Jeuveau® and similar medicines treat. Once the targeted muscle is paralyzed, the dynamic wrinkles soften and begin to fade. Wrinkle relaxers can also help prevent the formation of new wrinkles.

While the active ingredient in Jeuveau® is classified as a neurotoxin, its concentration in this medication is too low to cause any serious side effects. The medicine is injected directly into the muscle and remains localized, which means there is minimal risk of it causing any systemic damage.

What Areas Can Jeuveau® Treat?

Jeuveau® is currently approved only for the treatment of glabellar lines — those two lines right above your nose and between the eyebrows. This medication has only recently been introduced to the market and has not been studied yet as a treatment for other types of facial wrinkles.

If you are interested in also treating forehead lines and crow’s feet, we also offer Botox® injections. For marionette lines and other wrinkles in the lower face, we can suggest Dermal Fillers, Hydrafacial and Chemical Peels, among our other nonsurgical facial rejuvenation options.

How Long Will The Results Last?

Clinical trials found that 38 percent of Jeuveau® patients had visible results five months after receiving the treatment. Most other wrinkle relaxers last three to four months after the first treatment, while results generally last longer with each subsequent treatment.

However, individual results may vary as patients tend to react differently to different neuromodulator formulations. If you are new to wrinkle relaxers, you may want to give Jeuveau® a try since it can be more affordable due to its lower initial costs and relatively long duration.

Differences Between Jeuveau® and Botox®

Both medicines use purified forms of botulinum toxin A to treat dynamic wrinkles in the upper face. But even though their active ingredient is the same and mechanism of action identical, their formulations are different as well as their intended use:

  • Botox® is approved to treat a wider range of wrinkles, while Jeuveau® is approved only for glabellar lines.
  • Botox® has been approved for many medical conditions, such as chronic migraines, strabismus and even an overactive bladder. Jeuveau® is designed and used for cosmetic purposes only.
  • Jeuveau® has advanced Hi-Pure™ technology, which the manufacturer claims makes it much safer.
  • Jeuveau® is slightly more affordable because it is intended for cosmetic use only and is relatively new on the market.
  • Botox has been on the market much longer, since 1989 to be exact, and has stood the test of time in terms of safety and efficiency.

Beyond these differences, the two treatments are quite similar. Whether you should choose one or the other for your frown lines is an entirely personal choice.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Most adults in relatively good health can be candidates for this treatment. Ideal candidates are patients experiencing early signs of dynamic glabellar lines. Patients with static glabellar lines may also be candidates, but they may benefit from a combination of different nonsurgical treatments.

Patients who are not good candidates for Jeuveau® and other wrinkle relaxers are those with the following characteristics:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have an active infection in the area
  • Known allergies to any one of the ingredients
  • Have serious muscular or neurological conditions
  • Have unrealistic expectations

We will let you know whether Jeuveau® is right for you during your initial consultation at South Shore Plastic Surgery.

What to Expect

Wrinkle relaxer injections are an in-office, minimally-invasive procedure. There is no downtime with Jeuveau®, so patients can resume their usual activities as soon as their treatment is over.

Preparation

To prepare for this procedure, we may ask you to stop taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, blood thinners, vitamin E and other drugs and supplements that thin the blood. This is to prevent bruising at the injection site. Not using Retin-A or drinking alcohol a couple of days before the treatment is also recommended. We may also suggest taking certain antiviral medications if you have a history of herpes.

Treatment

The procedure starts with your provider cleansing your skin with an antiseptic or alcohol to minimize the risk of infection. They will then use insulin-type needles to inject the medicine into specific muscles in your forehead. You may feel a slight pinch, but the treatment is generally comfortable. Depending on how deep your lines are, you may need 10 to 20 units.

Recovery

Recovery after Jeuveau® injections is quick and easy. Most patients notice only mild swelling in the treatment area for two to three days, with some patients reporting a mild tugging feeling. We recommend not rubbing the treatment area to avoid causing the medicine to migrate to other areas of your face. It is also a good idea to skip exercising for the first day to prevent bruising.
