One of the most talked about and used anti-wrinkle treatments is in the form of a quick set of injections, set to reduce muscle activity and get rid of those aging signs fast. We’re talking about Botox of course, and here at South Shore Plastic Surgery, we like to explore all the possibilities of each treatment not just for the original and first employed use, but the potential of the injection beyond advertisement. Dr. Vasisht wants to study the world of Botox further than what you know about it, just in case you ever need additional options for treatment in a few areas that have nothing to do with wrinkles but functional things that often weigh on us as people each day. We’re going to focus on 3 places Botox will benefit that aren’t just your face.
1. Treating Muscle Spasms and Uncontrolled Blinking
Lots of people experience an occasional spasm in their muscles which is normal but only once in a while. Some others are not so lucky to experience these for a short period and sporadically because they suffer from long-term muscle spasms that can make certain activities difficult to perform. Muscle spasms can bother patients and the only way to fix it is with a relaxer that will slow the working muscle and offer you time to recover from the overstimulation. Our patients sometimes have muscle spasms occur within the eye area, blepharospasms, muscle spasms in the neck and other areas of the body.
But for now, these are some of the most common and we can see why because these areas work a lot for expression and functional movement, so they’re always firing. Uncontrolled blinking is an issue we find in patients; most believe it’s just a tick and something they cannot fix. However, the same with wrinkles around the eye, the muscles in this ocular region can cause spasm and uncontrolled blinking. We inject the area around the eye with Botox to calm the nerves and muscles that produce the action. This condition makes a lot of people feel self-conscious because it’s automatic and can’t be controlled by what you do. We recommend this for uncontrolled blinking since it’s fast, uses a small needle and can greatly reduce the blinking without harming your confidence.
Injection of the Botox toxin can help calm these areas and possibly reset these spasms over time. As with the anti-wrinkle injections, they last a few months and then need to be administered again for extended effects.
2. Reduce Migraines and Headaches
Some headaches, tension headaches, are often caused by the layer of muscles around the skull. If we think about reducing the activity in the muscles here, then maybe we can reduce the pain involved in chronic headaches. While not always recommended, Botox is approved to start working overtime to help people with this issue. Medications can some- times become overwhelming and won’t always produce the best results so why not try Botox? We inject the forehead, temples, and back of the head to target all the muscle groups working to cause headaches and migraines. It’s a quick treatment and may help make your life easier, plus you can ditch the prescriptions.
3. Excessive Sweating (Hyperhidrosis)
So many people feel themselves sweating under pressure. But for others, with or without the pressures of life, they sweat either way and all the time. This condition of overstimulated sweat glands causes confidence issues in every person that deals with it daily. There are some surface things you can do to reduce the appearance of sweat, but injections with Botox are the best remedy for hyperhidrosis of the hands and under the arms. To counter the effects of hyperhidrosis, the injection calms sweat glands by reducing their activity and any muscle activity there as well.
