What is Liposuction?

Liposuction (or lipoplasty) is a body-sculpting procedure to remove fat that is unresponsive to dieting and exercising. This procedure can be applied to nearly any area of the body and is commonly used on multiple areas during an operation. Liposuction results in a slimmer and better proportioned figure. Liposuction is used effectively to reduce love handles, saddlebags, a double-chin, a bulge around the waistline, or other unsightly fatty deposits in order to develop a better shape and create a more beautiful body.

At South Shore Plastic Surgery, New Jersey Liposuction Surgeon Dr. Vasisht also offers SMARTLIPO, or laser body sculpting. This is a revolutionary procedure that has changed the concept of liposuction and made it easier to have the procedure performed in the office setting.

Laser-Assisted Liposuction

Losing weight is a wonderful accomplishment. Doing so results in better health, a more flattering figure and greater confidence. However, even if you’ve lost a significant amount of weight, you may notice something frustrating: fat deposits remain. From the chin to the abdomen, fat in certain regions of the body doesn’t respond well to exercise or dieting, making it challenging to attain your ideal body. It’s frustrating, especially considering how much effort and determination go into losing weight, but there are other solutions that can help you achieve your body contouring goals. Your most stubborn fat deposits can be removed with a technologically-advanced cosmetic procedure, helping you to see the results you initially desired when you set out on your weight loss journey.

Laser-assisted liposuction is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that utilizes laser energy to liquefy fat cells and remove those pesky fat deposits. With this treatment, you can finally slim and contour parts of your body that have not responded to exercise and diet, creating a figure you can confidently flaunt. At South Shore Plastic Surgery in southern New Jersey, we’d love to ensure your weight loss journey wasn’t in vain by performing laser-assisted liposuction on you. How Smartlipo works

The Smartlipo laser-assisted lipolysis system is a highly efficient solution for destroying and permanently eliminating fat cells:

  • A 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser fiber is introduced through a small cannula, delivering energy directly to subcutaneous fat cells-causing them to rupture. The emitted fat melting energy also coagulates tissue, thus inducing collagen retraction and tissue tightening.
  • The laser causes small blood vessels to coagulate immediately—resulting in less bleeding, swelling and bruising than conventional liposuction, for faster healing and recovery.
  • Smartlipo can supplement or augment traditional methods of cellulite treatment.
  • Given the cannula’s small size and gentleness of the procedure, Smartlipo is a minimally invasive treatment that only requires local anesthesia—enhancing patient safety and reducing the likelihood of side effects.
  • A confluent red diode laser provides a powerful visual guide during treatment.
  • Typically only one short treatment session is needed—depending on the area that is to be treated.

Reasons for Considering Smartlipo:

  • Eliminate fat from any of the following areas:
  • Chin and Neckline
  • Back
  • Upper Arms
  • Stomach and Waistline
  • Hips and Buttocks
  • Thighs and Knees
  • Calves and Ankles
  • Create a more proportioned figure

SmartLipo is not a replacement for proper exercise and diet. Instead, liposuction is a reduction procedure for stubborn areas where fat accumulates. Used in combination with several areas of the body, liposuction can provide a well proportioned body appearance. Ideal surgical candidates are those already in good physical condition but having stubborn areas that do not respond to diet and exercise.

Liposuction Procedure Details

Liposuction can be done under general anesthesia with the patient asleep, but SmartLipo can be performed under local anesthesia where the area is numbed and the patient remains awake. Through a tiny incision, a narrow tube or “cannula” is inserted and used to vacuum out the fatty tissue beneath the skin. The surgeon determines the amount of fat to be removed by massaging the skin and squeezing the tissue. After eliminating the excess fat, the incisions are closed by applying a compression dressing or bandage to the area in order to prevent bleeding, reduce swelling, and support the affected area.

There are several different types of liposuction procedures, such as tumescent or ultrasound liposuction, and as discussed above SmartLipo, that have developed as a result of recent advancements in new technologies. Together the patient and the surgeon can discuss which method(s) are best during the initial consultation visit. Liposuction can last from thirty minutes to several hours depending upon the amount of fat to be removed. Liposuction surgery is an excellent procedure that can benefit those who want to remove unattractive fatty deposits.

Lipo Recovery Process

New techniques allow for faster recovery from liposuction procedures. The length of the recovery will depend on how extensive of an operation the patient undergoes. Generally, post-operative instructions call for plenty of rest and limited movement in order to speed up the healing process and reduce the recovery time. A support garment may need to be worn for several weeks after the surgery, depending upon which area(s) are selected to utilize the liposuction procedure. Patients sometimes report minor pain associated with surgery which can be treated effectively with oral medication. While complications are rare, patients can minimize the risk for potential problems by carefully following the directions given after surgery.

How Laser-Assisted Liposuction Works

Laser-assisted liposuction (also known as lipolysis) is an FDA-approved alternative to traditional liposuction methods. The treatment requires only one incision, compared to the conventional technique that needs various incisions, and is quicker, poses fewer complications and is less painful. The treatment involves inserting a fiber-optic light that causes fat cells to melt, which are then suctioned out via a cannula (small tube).

Laser-assisted liposuction has the additional cosmetic benefit of encouraging skin tightening. The fiber optic heating effect stimulates your body’s production of collagen, a structural protein that promotes skin firmness — something that traditional liposuction can’t do. This benefit means less loose or sagging skin after your liposuction treatment, which sometimes prevents people from attaining their desired results from the procedure. The laser-assisted technique also helps blood vessels coagulate, meaning less bleeding, swelling and bruising after treatment.

Laser-assisted liposuction is a safe and effective treatment for anyone seeking to remove unwanted fat deposits that negatively impact their figure.

Reasons for Considering Laser-Assisted Liposuction:

Eliminate fat from any of the following areas and create a more proportioned figure:

  • Chin and Neckline
  • Back
  • Upper Arms
  • Stomach and Waistline
  • Hips and Buttocks
  • Thighs and Knees
  • Calves and Ankles

Laser-assisted liposuction is not a replacement for proper exercise and diet. Instead, laser-assisted liposuction is a reduction procedure for stubborn areas where fat accumulates. Used in combination with a healthy lifestyle and performed in several areas of the body, laser-assisted liposuction can provide a well-proportioned body appearance.

Ideal Candidates for Laser-Assisted Liposuction

Ideal candidates are already in good physical condition but have stubborn fatty deposits that do not respond well to diet and exercise. This treatment is appropriate for patients who are at or near their target weight. Dr. Vasisht will determine if you’re a suitable candidate during an initial consultation. Contraindications that could potentially prevent you from receiving this treatment include:

  • You’re pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You’re younger than 18
  • You have a pacemaker or other implanted device

Get the Most Out of Your Laser-Assisted Liposuction With Lipo 360

Lipo 360 is an excellent opportunity for patients to have a complete physical makeover through laser-assisted liposuction. The comprehensive treatment involves targeting four primary areas where excess fat deposits are frequently found. This includes the back, arms, abdomen and thighs, for a total transformation. Lipo 360 is often performed on women after pregnancy. The treatment is excellent for transforming your body from a boxy shape to the coveted hourglass curvature. Patients who decide to have Lipo 360 should expect a longer treatment time, but the results are much more dramatic than having a single area treated. Dr. Vasisht will tailor your Lipo 360 treatment specifically to your unique desires and goals. After Lipo 360, you can confidently wear your favorite clothing once again, have a body defined by beautifully balanced curves and reduce the circumference of your waist by four to five inches.

Although this treatment is often performed on women who went through pregnancy, every patient is encouraged to inquire about Lipo 360. Dr. Vasisht will determine if the treatment is right for you and will explain its substantial benefits.

Laser-Assisted Liposuction Procedure Details

Liposuction is done under general anesthesia with the patient asleep. Laser-assisted liposuction differs because it’s performed under local anesthesia where the area is numbed and the patient remains awake. The treatment site will be cleaned and marked to ensure sanitization and accuracy, respectively.

Once the treated area is prepped, Dr. Vasisht makes a tiny incision and inserts another tube that contains the laser. In some cases, Dr. Vasisht may insert an additional tube that’ll release additional anesthetics to help mitigate any pain, before inserting the laser. The fat cells gradually liquefy as heat emits from the fiber optic light. Dr. Vasisht then inserts a small tube and suctions out the liquified fat. How much fat is removed varies for each patient and will determine how long the process takes. Typically, laser-assisted liposuction takes 45 minutes to one hour. The treatment can take up to three hours in some cases.

After the fatty deposits have been eliminated, the incision is closed, and a compression bandage is applied to prevent bleeding, reduce swelling and provide support to the treatment site. Liposuction surgery is an excellent procedure that can benefit those who want to remove unattractive fatty deposits.

Laser-Assisted Liposuction Recovery Process

Laser-assisted liposuction requires a short recovery period. You’ll be able to leave the South Shore Plastic Surgery offices immediately afterward. You should expect some discomfort for approximately 48 hours, which can be mitigated with over-the-counter pain medication. You’ll be advised to avoid any strenuous activities until you feel fully healed and have restored energy levels.

You may experience some bruising, swelling or bleeding around the treatment site, but this is your body’s normal response to the procedure. Usually, these common side effects last for two to three weeks. If it’s a more extensive treatment, it can take four to six weeks until they go away. While complications are rare, patients can minimize the risk of potential problems by carefully following the directions given after surgery. Possible complications include infection, but Dr. Vasisht will ensure your laser-assisted liposuction is performed in a sterile environment, minimizing the risk.

Laser-Assisted Liposuction Results

Laser-assisted liposuction has the potential to sculpt your body into the figure you’ve always wanted, but dieting and exercise alone couldn’t achieve. Slim, toned and contoured, your body will look attractive and proportional, and your daily life will be enhanced with new-found confidence.

You should be aware that it will take some time until your final results are achieved, as common side effects such as bruising or swelling may obscure the improvements in the area for a short period. You’ll experience the many benefits laser-assisted liposuction has to offer once these side effects have subsided.

Laser-assisted liposuction is long-lasting and can potentially be permanent. Patients are encouraged to continue living healthy and exercise regularly to maintain their results. If you don’t, it’s possible for the fat cells that weren’t removed to expand, which will impact your results.
