An Overview of Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation enhances breast size and shape by adding volume through implants. Many patients choose this option to achieve their desired proportions or restore volume that has diminished over time. Implants, which come in many different sizes and materials, are placed within the breast to give you a natural increase in size.
A breast augmentation is different from a breast lift which addresses sagging and repositions breast tissue to create a firmer, uplifted contour. Combining augmentation with a lift can offer added volume and a youthful shape.
What Will Your Consultation Be Like?
Meeting Your Surgeon
Your initial consultation for breast enlargement will be a chance to meet with Dr. Vasisht and discuss your goals and expectations. During this conversation, we’ll talk openly about the changes you’re looking for and answer any questions you have about the procedure. Dr. Vasisht will listen to your goals, offer insights, and outline what breast enlargement can realistically do for you.
Medical History and Physical Exam
A review of your medical history will be part of your consultation. We will discuss any past surgeries, current medications, and known allergies. During the physical exam, Dr. Vasisht will assess your breast tissue and overall anatomy to help determine the best approach. Details like your skin quality and chest structure are also taken into account.
Understanding the Risks and Benefits
We will make sure you understand both the benefits and potential risks associated with breast enlargement. Dr. Vasisht will discuss factors such as recovery time, implant types, and possible side effects to give you a comprehensive view of the process.
Choosing the Right Implant
Implant Material
Breast enlargement offers three main implant materials: saline, silicone, and gummy bear. Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution, providing a firmer feel. Silicone implants contain a gel that more closely mimics natural breast tissue and has a softer texture. Gummy bear implants, which are also silicone-based, are made with a cohesive gel that holds its shape even if the shell breaks. Each material has distinct characteristics, and selecting the right one depends on the feel and appearance you want.
Implant Size
Implant size is measured in volume (cc), not bra size. Larger volumes create a more dramatic effect, while smaller sizes offer a subtler enhancement. During your consultation, we’ll explore how different sizes would look on you to help you decide on the volume that best matches your aesthetic goals.
Implant Texture
Implants come in smooth and textured surfaces. Smooth implants move more freely within the breast pocket which may create a softer, more natural feel as you change positions. Textured implants are designed to stay in place since the texture encourages tissue to grow around the implant. This can come with added stability, but in some cases can increase the risk of complications.
Implant Shape
The shape of the implant, either round or teardrop (anatomical), influences the overall look. Round implants add fullness to both the upper and lower breast. Teardrop implants mimic the natural slope of the breast for a more natural-looking contour. Gummy bear implants are tear-drop shaped while saline implants are round. Other silicone implants can be a variety of different shapes with different levels of cohesiveness which impacts how they move once in the breast.
Implant Profile
The implant profile determines how much the implant projects from the chest, with options ranging from low to high. A high-profile implant gives a more prominent silhouette, while a low profile provides a broader shape with less projection.
Placement and Incision Options
Over or Under the Muscle?
Breast implants can be placed either over or under the chest muscle. Placing the implant over the muscle (subglandular placement) usually allows for a quicker recovery and works well if you have more natural breast tissue. An implant placed under the muscle (submuscular placement) creates a softer, more natural look, especially for those with less breast tissue, and can help reduce visible rippling.
Types of Incisions
The inframammary incision, located in the fold under the breast, is the most commonly used during breast enlargement. During this incision type, the scars are hidden in the crease under the breast. The periareolar incision, made along the edge of the areola, is a discreet option that may suit those wanting minimal scarring on the breast. There’s also the transaxillary incision, positioned in the armpit, which leaves no scar on the breast itself. The newest technique, though not commonly used, is an incision in the belly button that also leaves no scarring on the breast.
Preparing for Your Surgery Day
If you’re a smoker, we will have you stop well in advance of your surgery since smoking can affect healing. It’s also helpful to set up a comfortable recovery space at home with essentials within easy reach, so you’re ready to rest post-surgery. Make sure to arrange for a friend or family member to drive you to and from the surgery. On the day of your surgery, bring any paperwork, comfortable clothing, and personal items that you’ll want immediately afterward.
What to Expect From the Surgery
The breast augmentation procedure typically lasts one to two hours and takes place in a fully equipped facility, such as Centennial Surgery Center, Summit Surgery Center, and Millennium Surgery Center. Dr. Vasisht also has hospital privileges if a hospital setting is preferred. After the procedure, you’ll spend some time in our post-operative care area, where we will monitor your initial recovery and make sure you’re comfortable and ready to go home safely.
What to Expect From Your Recovery Timeline
- The First 24-48 Hours After Surgery: After breast augmentation surgery, you’ll need to wear supportive garments and keep movement to a minimum to support healing. We use the On-Q pain pump system to help manage post-surgery discomfort, reducing the need for oral pain medications.
- One Week Post-Surgery: By this stage in your breast augmentation recovery, most normal activities can be resumed, though heavy lifting and intense exercise should still be avoided. Swelling and bruising may still be present, but you’ll notice a gradual improvement as you continue to heal.
- One Month Post-Surgery and Beyond: Around the one-month mark, you’ll begin to see how your final results are shaping up, though full results may take three to six months. Scarring will continue to fade over time, and your implants are made to last for many years (though not indefinitely). Regular mammograms and MRIs are recommended to monitor implant health.
