If you have started to notice that, despite your best efforts, your wrinkles are etching themselves deeper in your face, and your cheeks and lips have begun to lose volume, it may be time to consider injectable fillers. Injectable facial fillers are a nonsurgical, non-invasive method used to soften or diminish facial wrinkles, add volume to areas such as the nasal and tear troughs, augment thinning lips and hollow cheeks, and smooth nasolabial folds created by sagging skin.

At South Shore Plastic Surgery, we offer a variety of fillers designed to address all of your needs, whether you wish to eliminate facial folds, restore lost volume, or both. Dr. Vasisht is experienced in the art of injectable fillers and understands that each patient has unique features on their face. He uses his trained and artistic eye to ensure that your results look natural and beautiful, so that no one will be able to tell that you’ve had anything “done.”

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable treatments made from smooth gels that add subtle volume beneath the skin. They immediately fill the space under your skin to treat lines or create volume. There are different types of dermal fillers, including hyaluronic acid fillers and products made from ingredients that promote collagen stimulation. During your consultation, we will narrow down the product that is best for you.

What Are Hyaluronic Acid Fillers?

Hyaluronic acid is a popular ingredient in injectable fillers and can be used to treat a wide range of facial issues. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a tiny molecule that can be found naturally in almost every cell in your body, and has the incredible ability to retain nearly 1,000 times its own weight in water.

HA is a vital part of the systems in your body, because as it binds to water, it creates a viscous gel that serves to moisturize and lubricate everything from your eyes to your joints to your skin. In fact, almost 50 percent of the hyaluronic acid in your body is found in your skin, ensuring that it is perfectly hydrated without tipping the scales into too much hydration. HA can smooth out lines, fill in wrinkles, and add volume to your cheeks and lips, all while helping to keep your face hydrated, supple, and healthy.

What Types of Hyaluronic Acid Fillers Do We Offer?

JUVÉDERM®

The JUVÉDERM family is one of the most trusted names in injectable fillers, offering a range of options for everything from lips to lines. Each product is formulated with hyaluronic acid, but they have different weights and thicknesses.

  • JUVÉDERM VOLLURE®: This is a versatile filler used to soften moderate to severe lines, especially around the mouth and nose. VOLLURE offers natural-looking results that move with your expressions.
  • JUVÉDERM ULTRA: Known for its smooth texture, this filler is commonly used for lip augmentation and treating finer facial wrinkles. It can give your lips more shape and fullness while still feeling soft and natural.
  • JUVÉDERM ULTRA PLUS: This filler is a thicker formula that works well for deeper wrinkles and areas needing more structure, such as nasolabial folds. It provides more dramatic correction while still blending seamlessly with your natural features.
  • JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC: JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA XC is used to address perioral lines (or “lipstick lines”) as well as to augment and plump up your lips. It is injected around the mouth and will soften the appearance of perioral wrinkles or augment a thin pout for up to a year.
  • JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC: JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC is designed to address areas suffering from loss of fullness and sagging skin due to age, restoring contour and lift to your midface and cheeks. JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC replaces lost volume, offering beautiful, natural-looking results that may last for as long as two years.

Restylane

The Restylane family is another leading name in injectable fillers, offering a wide variety of formulas to treat different facial concerns. Like JUVÉDERM, Restylane products are made with hyaluronic acid, but each one has a unique consistency and purpose.

  • Restylane Silk: A smooth and delicate filler often chosen as a lip filler for subtle enhancement and softening of fine lines around the mouth.
  • Restylane Eyelight: Specifically designed to treat hollows under the eyes, this filler helps reduce the tired look that shadows can create.
  • Restylane Kysse: A flexible filler created to add volume and definition to the lips while maintaining natural movement.
  • Restylane Lyft: A firmer filler used to restore volume in the cheeks and hands.
  • Restylane Defyne: Designed to smooth deeper folds and lines, while allowing natural expression.
  • Restylane Contour: A sculpting filler developed for the cheeks that enhances shape and restores youthful curves.
  • Restylane Refyne: Perfect for softening moderate facial lines, this filler keeps results flexible so expressions still look authentic.

Collagen Boosting Fillers

Collagen-boosting fillers contain an ingredient that, when injected into your skin, works to stimulate your body’s natural production of collagen. Suspended in a malleable gel or saline solution, these microparticles induce the regeneration of collagen underneath your skin, restoring lost volume and minimizing the appearance of wrinkles. Because this type of filler increases collagen production, once the carrier has been absorbed, your results will last longer, as the volume is gradually replaced with natural collagen.

Sculptra®

Sculptra Aesthetic uses poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which is a collagen stimulator, as its primary ingredient. It is designed to treat mild to severe nasolabial folds, marionette lines and chin lines. Sculptra Aesthetic typically requires around three treatments over the span of three months, as your results will improve gradually during that time. Your results leave you looking naturally beautiful for up to two years.

What to Expect From Your Injectable Filler Treatment and Results

All injectable filler treatments are performed right in our office, and depending on which filler you choose, your results can last up to two years. Fillers are all minimally invasive procedures that require no downtime – you can return to work or other activities without anyone even knowing that you had a cosmetic treatment. Each session lasts less than 30 minutes and is virtually painless, though a local anesthetic may be used to ensure that you are completely comfortable during the procedure.

There is no downtime for recovery required, and side effects, if any, are minimal and temporary. Some swelling and bruising at the injection location is normal, and typically lasts no more than a few days. At South Shore Plastic Surgery, Dr. Vasisht uses hyaluronic acid or collagen-building injectable fillers, all of which are FDA-approved and proven effective in rejuvenating and refreshing an aging face.

After Your Injectable Filler Appointment

After getting injectable fillers, it’s important to give your skin the right care so you can enjoy the best possible results. With hyaluronic acid fillers, using a cool compress and avoiding strenuous activity for the first 24 hours can help minimize swelling. We also recommend skipping alcohol and excessive sun or heat exposure right after treatment, as these can increase swelling.

If you’ve chosen Sculptra, aftercare is a little different. You’ll need to gently massage the treated areas several times a day for a few days to help the product settle evenly and stimulate collagen production. For all filler types, keeping your skin clean and avoiding makeup for the rest of the treatment day allows the injection sites to heal.

FAQs About Dermal Fillers

How Long Will It Take to See Results?

With facial fillers, the results usually appear right away, and you will notice smoother contours or added volume before leaving the office. Sculptra works differently, since it stimulates collagen production, so the results appear gradually in the weeks following treatment.

How Long Will My Dermal Filler Results Last?

The longevity of cosmetic fillers depends on the type of filler used, the treatment area and your natural metabolism. Hyaluronic acid fillers typically last anywhere from six months to two years, depending on the product. Sculptra has a different benefit, as it stimulates your body to create collagen, and those improvements can last up to two years.

What Is the Difference Between Fillers and Botox?

Filler works by adding volume beneath the skin to smooth lines, plump features or restore youthful contours. Botox relaxes the muscles that cause expression lines, softening wrinkles that appear when you smile, frown or raise your eyebrows. Both treatments can complement each other, and we often use them together for a more comprehensive approach to facial rejuvenation.
